Anyone noticed just how many Brits are being nominated this year at the Oscars? There’s Tom Wilkinson for Michael Crichton, Keira Knightley for Atonement, Daniel Day Lewis for There Will Be Blood, Julie Christie for Away from Her, Saoirse Ronan for Atonement, Tilda Swinton for Michael Crichton. Even Johnny Depp and Cate Blanchett are being nominated for their roles as Brits in Sweeny Todd the Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Elizabeth: The Golden Age, respectively.

Now we have America’s very own little train wreck, Britney Spears picking up the accent with her close connections to her latest man British born Adnan Ghalib Two weeks ago, in yet another confrontation with paparazzi, she suddenly started screeching like Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady. Adnan Ghalib, tells reporters Spears just thinks talking like the Geico gecko lizard is cute. (for the Brits out there, that’s an American commercial dubbed over with a cockney accent supplied by Jake Wood previously of Eastenders).

Since marrying Guy Ritchie even Madonna, who is world renowned for reinventing herself, has acquired and English accent affectation. Madonna, living in England, alters her low vowel in rather so that it comes out as rahther. Most of her accent is middle-class Michigan except for these few accommodations and the attention she pays to the double ‘t’ in bottle and Patty!

So don’t hide the English accent under a British bushel. As James Dean stated, ‘Shout it loud, I’m Brit and proud’.
