It’s been more than 2 years since Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith died in Florida after taking what was eventually found to be a fatal overdose of medication.

And now her ex boyfriend, Howard K Stern is facing prosecution for having given her thousands of prescription drugs in the years leading up to her death. Along with two doctors, Stern was charged with three felony counts of conspiracy. Prosecutors said the doctors gave the drugs, including opiates and benzodiazepines, to Stern, who then gave them to Smith over a period of three years.

The 39 year old Smith was a potential heir to an oil fortune after having married J Howard Marshall in June 1994, which in turn also saw her involved in an ongoing court case over the fortune following his death in August 1995.

Anna’s use of drugs increased in 2006 after her son Daniel died and Braun and Eroshevich began treating the actress and traveled on several occasions during a six-month period to the Bahamas, where Smith was living with Stern, and wrote prescription.

Stern and his three co-defendants were also charged with obtaining fraudulent prescriptions and unlawfully prescribing a controlled substance to Anna Nicole.

The day Anna Nicole died there were eleven prescription medications found in her hotel room according to the medical examiner’s office. There were more than 600 pills including about 450 muscle relaxants missing from prescriptions that had been prescribed in the name of Stern. None was prescribed in Smith’s own name.

Looks like Larry Birkhead will get yet another laugh at the expense of Stern after he also won the paternity suit against Stern in 2007, as the father of Anna’s baby Dannielynn who was born just months prior to her death.
