There’s a growing movement among celebrities to bring to the attention of the public, the plight of the millions of innocent people suffering from starvation and displacement in Darfur and none more newsworthy than Mia Farrow embarking on a hunger strike.

Following on from George Clooney and his father, Nick Clooney, a veteran American journalist and broadcaster, who are both constantly raising awareness about the crisis in Sudan’s Darfur region, Mia has began a fast of water only in solidarity for the people of Darfur and is attempting to abstain from all food for three weeks.

Appearing on Monday night’s Larry King Live show, Mia spoke passionately of her many visits to the region where she has encountered mothers who’s children had been snatched from them and bayoneted by rebel troops loyal to Sudanese President Omar al Bashir.
In early March, Bashir was indicted in his absence by the international criminal court who issued an arrest warrant for his crimes of murder, rape, torture and displacement of millions in the Sudan region.

In response the president retaliated by expelling 16 key aid agencies from Darfur. He has already displaced nearly three million people and he is now going to sever the lifeline to those displaced people who cannot sustain themselves by expelling the agency workers.
Mia has begun a blog, www.miafarrow.org, where she hopes to reach supporters daily during the next 3 weeks, and where she will leave messages such as, ‘The people of Darfur are going to starve in huge numbers. I’m going to fast I hope for 21 days if I last that long, but the people that are going to starve to death cannot be heard, their voices cannot be heard. I’ve just come back from one month in the region, I have friends there and I have promises to keep. I’m proud to do whatever I can to the plight of the displaced people.
By drawing attention to the people of Darfur Mia is hoping for a US government intervention and asks the question, ‘ Are we going to let that happen? I can’t believe that there hasn’t been a larger outcry that merits the death of more than a million people.’
What can the average American do to have their voice heard?
You can call the White House. Mia set up the 1800 G-E-N-O-C-I-D-E number, so please call the White House or call your elected leader; tell them it’s not acceptable. Tell them we are not prepared to watch more than one million people die.
